Dactyl: Alert system that uses haptic feedback





When living in a world dominated by able-bodied people, it’s easy to forget about those who live a completely different life due to physical limitations. Currently, designs from small everyday products to architecture and public spaces focus only on the “majority” which is in reality not the majority of the population. Seeing this problem, we as a society need to talk more about the discrimination happening against the physically disabled and fight for changes. To look into this big topic, I started with looking into deafness, and how differently the world feels like for this community.

Due to a smaller market and lower demand, products specifically made for the disabled community are expensive, outdated, and not so visually appealing. Interested in this problem, I wanted to see if I could design a product that could possibly widen the market while giving a solution to small problems the deaf community come face to face daily. So, I decided to design a wristband that responds to sudden decibel increases by using haptic feedback. This design not only raises awareness and talk around deafness but normalizes designs aimed at the disabled community.
